| Arts Rolla's July Exhibit Shares work of Two Missouri Artists Jul 2nd, 2008 (4:28 PM)
Arts Rolla is pleased to share the work of two Missouri Artists. The exhibit features the photography of Alan O'Neal and the acrylics of Louise Thies.
Photographer Alan O'Neal share the following information:
I am a retired engineer that started photography before I can remember, and some of the works I offer for sale were taken nearly 25 years ago. I grew up in the country, still live in the country, and have a fondness for nature; all of which has an influence on the type of pictures I take.
In 2004 I started doing Digital Art. This is a process where I take a photo and create an alternate image out of it. Many times the final results will have no appearance of being a photograph. Sometimes they do, and only I know that it is different from the original photo. Other times the result does appear to be a photo, but with a difference that the viewer realized it has been creatively enhanced. It is something I find both fun and challenging. In most cases I use multiple steps to create my finished works, but will not pass up a chance to make something pleasing just because the process is not complicated. Next to creating something pleasing to the eye, I enjoy creating an image by processes that are not readily understood. I find it neat that it is possible to have an alternate image of a good photo that is also pleasing. It is also satisfying to take a less pleasing photo and create a desirable image from it. I create my photo art only from pictures that I have taken.
Everything I do has been self-taught. That may not make it the best, but it is definitely original.
Artist Louise Thies shares the followng:
consumed with copying the Mickey Mouse © and Donald Duck © that were on her hand-me-down chalkboard instead of practicing the alphabet. She pursued art as a passion, but her careers veered in other directions, until finally coming full circle and colliding. A hobby turned into a fulltime business when she opened a taxidermy shop in rural Missouri in the early ‘80s. Her drive to succeed earned her over thirty awards and the title “Master Taxidermist.” While pursuing a degree in biology, she was required to take a humanities class. With two credits to go, Art Appreciation compelled her to change majors, start over and graduate cum laude with an Art Education degree. She chose to create art rather than teach. Her passion is plein aire painting. She also etches her artwork on granite by hand for several monument companies.
The artwork will be on display through the month of July. We invite you to enjoy this original exhibit. If you are interested in purchasing the artwork or if you would like to know more about the artists or Arts Rolla, please contact Arts Rolla at 573 364-5539.
| MISSOURI S&T’S LEACH THEATRE AND ARTS ROLLA COLLABORATE TO BRING GRAMMY NOMINATED BLUEGRASS BAND, CHERRYHOLMES TO ROLLA Jun 19th, 2008 (2:55 PM)
#1 Bill Board artists and Bluegrass band Cherryholmes will have Missouri S&T's Leach stage hopping Oct. 12, 2008.
Until April of 1999, the dynamic family band known as Cherryholmes did not exist, and half of its youthful members hadn't even picked up an instrument. In five short years, this high-energy Nashville-based band was named 2005 IBMA's Entertainers of the Year. Cherryholmes has many qualities that make them unique, but the basis of their success lies in plain, old-fashioned hard work combined with shining star talent that only appears to glow more brightly with each performance. They embody the American Bluegrass dream. All six band members pool their creative ideas to form their own new brand of bluegrass music. Every member takes a turn singing lead and showcasing their abilities. Their live shows include twin fiddles, Irish step dancing, classic country yodeling, and old-time claw hammer in addition to their dynamic bluegrass. They have continued to receive many industry nominations and awards- including a Grammy nomination in 2006 for their first commercial release "Cherryholmes". Their second release on Skaggs Family Records

| Paula Turney Brewer Is Featured Artist At The Creamery's May Exhibit Apr 30th, 2008 (2:15 PM)
Rolla artist Paula Turney Brewer will be the featured artist at the Creamery’s May 2nd opening and her show of graphite art on canvas and on paper will run through May 27th. Her subject matter varies from landscapes and wildlife to portraits and “some things purely imagined,” she says. “Creating artwork is a basic part of my heart and soul, true ever since I discovered the joy of drawing at age 10,” explains Brewer who will be present for a MEET THE ARTIST reception May 2nd, 6 to 9pm, at the Creamery Arts Center. Brewer majored in Art at the University of North Texas and taught art in public school for two years before returning to UNT for her Masters in Art. She taught at the university while working on her graduate degree, then taught in public schools for three years and also for a year at Missouri S&T. Continues Brewer, “My greatest joy comes from nurturing an idea in my mind for awhile and then seeing it come to life in my art studio, fully developed.” Her work can be seen in private, corporate and university collections and is carried by the Orval Reeves Art Gallery in Rolla. She has participated for more than 20 years in juried and judged shows and won numerous awards at the local, state and national level. “Everything I see around me…everywhere I go….I find possibilities to be transformed into art creations,” concludes Brewer. “If I live to be 150, there would still be creative ideas in my mind, waiting to come to life. Exciting, eh?” For information about the Brewer exhibit, the painting class or the writing workshop, call the Springfield Regional Arts Council, 417-862-ARTS(2787) or go to www.SpringfieldArts.org These programs are funded, in part, by the Missouri Arts Council, the Community Foundation of the Ozarks and through private contributions.

| Ozark Rivers Audubon Presents "An Evening with John James Audubon" Mar 5th, 2008 (11:27 AM)
Ozark Rivers Audubon Presents
An Evening with John James Audubon
Artist and Naturalist
As portrayed by well-known storyteller and teacher Brian "Fox" Ellis
Have you ever wondered what the famous bird-man, Mr. John James Audubon was like? Ever want to ask him a question about birds, nature, his art? Well, thanks to Ozark Rivers Audubon in partnership with the Missouri Humanities Council and with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, you have a chance to do just that. You are invited to a very special event, "An Evening with John James Audubon" at 7:00 p.m. Monday, March 10th at the Cedar Street Theatre, 701 N Cedar Street in Rolla. A "meet the artist" reception with refreshments donated by many local businesses will follow. This event is free and open to the public.
Spend an hour in the studio of one of America’s greatest naturalists and wildlife artists. Listen to tales of his adventures as he finishes something no one had every accomplished before: drawing every bird in North America. Audubon will enchant you with stories of his travels and travails in the wildest places on the planet. He will celebrate the natural history of the North America as he saw it in the early 1800s.
Storyteller and author Brian "Fox" Ellis, in the persona of Audubon, brings history, ecology, art and literature to life in this meticulously researched program that celebrates the life work of one of America’s greatest artist and naturalist!
Mr. Ellis portrays Audubon drawing from Audubon’s journals, essays, and letters to his friends and colleagues. This program was developed with a grant from the USFWS as part of their celebration of the 100th anniversary of the National Wildlife Refuge System. Fox has performed as Audubon in museums, nature centers, schools and libraries across the United States, including Audubon’s home in Henderson, Kentucky.
This program was originally scheduled for December and postponed because of predicted inclement weather in our area. For more info contact Cathy at 341-2464.
| Tieliang Zhang - Arts Rolla Artist of the Month for March 2008 Feb 15th, 2008 (3:35 PM)
You are invited to attend an opening reception featuring the photography of Tielian Zhang. The opening reception will be held on Friday, March 7 from 5 PM to 7 PM at The Centre, located at 1200 N. Holloway, Rolla, MO.
When asked about his photography, the artist shared the following:
I really appreciate Arts Rolla giving me this great opportunity to let me introduce my favorite subject- The Great Wall. I was so shocked by what I saw when I first came to The Great Wall at Jian Kou Mountain in 1998. Since then, I will go there for photography ten times each year. I have a completely different feel in the different seasons when I take pictures. The Great Wall at Jian Kou Mountain was built around 15th century A.D.. After more than six hundred years, it has been integrated with the natural surroundings. Even though some parts have already collapsed, it gives me a better understanding of how the history evolved. When I am standing on the peak, The Great Wall looks like a huge fossil of a python crawling on the ridge. Especially in the dawn or early evening, it feels wonderful to shoot at changing light which is caused by changing temperatures.
The Great Wall in Jin Shan Ling was built around the same time as The Great Wall in Jian Kou Mountain, but The Great Wall in Jin Shan Ling was rebuilt around 1990. It has been restored and become a national park. If interested in ancient architecture, you can study the structure of the Great Wall.
Among various photography topics, I am keen on shooting the natural landscape. Walking in this natural environment is an enjoyment even if you do nothing. Nature is full of inspiration; it offers you a broad space for imagination. Nature is also a great composer whose work is waiting the photographer to be played. Sometimes I do not know what to do when I face the gorgeous landscape. I have been to Grand Canyon and Niagara Falls, and their beauty astonished me too.
My son is studying at Missouri University of Science & Technology (MS&T). My wife and I spent a wonderful summer at Rolla in 2007 which gave us a good memory.

| Artwork of Dan Woodward and Henry Metzner Featured by Arts Rolla during the month of December 2007.
Dec 5th, 2007 (4:48 PM)
Visitors at The Centre will enjoy an outstanding display of artwork by two local artists, Dan Woodward and Henry Metzner. Visitors will be delighted to see oils, pastels, watercolors and acrylics covering a variety of subjects.
The public is invited to a reception for the artist on Friday, December 7, from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm at The Centre, located on Holloway Street, Rolla, MO. The reception will provide an opportunity for the community to meet the artists and learn more about their artwork. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
About our artists Since retirement from UMR in 2001, Henry Metzner, has taken art instructions from several of the local visual artists, as well as serving a three-year term on the board of Arts Rolla. He dabbles in oils, acrylics and pastels, and has displayed his handiwork at the Arts Rolla exhibits for the last four years. He has found painting to be very pleasant pastime and a different approach to the world and its experiences. Henry hopes that others might be encouraged to pursue the arts in retirement as a new and novel challenge, and as a means of interacting with engaging people that might otherwise never have been met.
Dan Woodward is a long-time artist based in Rolla, Missouri, painting primarily in oils. He is also a past Arts Rolla board member and a member of “Local Color” and the St. Louis Artists’ Guild Board Member. As a colorist, Woodward is primarily involved with capturing the atmosphere or “air” of a scene. Each latitude has its different light, as does each day of a season, and recreating that light seems to be his life’s ambition apart from his choice of subject matter. He believes “The best quality an artist can cultivate is a good eye for light and color; a clear perception of the world around him. It is a lifetime’s education; a continuing joyful process.” He takes pleasure recording the quickly vanishing world of natural wilderness and historical identity.
Many of the pieces on display are for sale. Anyone interested in purchasing art or in learning more about the artists is invited to contact the Arts Rolla office at 364-5539 or visit our website at www.artsrolla.org. Financial assistance for this exhibit has been provided by our membership, the Missouri Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.

| Local Artist, Wayne Feeler is September 2007, Artist of the Month Aug 29th, 2007 (5:31 PM)
Wayne Feeler was born in Rolla, MO and spent his growing up time on his family's farm in Phelps County. Influenced at an early age by the fine drawings of horses and farm animals executed by his father, he has since been an artist.
He served 6 years in the Navy "Seabees" as a heavy equipment operator and served tours of duty in Alaska, Vietnam and Spain. Upon completion of his military service, he studied Painting and drawing at SMSU, located in Springfield, MO.
Wayne Feeler has earned a bachelor of fine arts degree in painting and drawing in 1979. Since that time he has been a working artist, studying from nature and the master painters that have gone before him.
Wayne looks primarily to the colorist, Rembrandt and Corot and Paul Cezanne and Henri Matisse. He has also been influenced by a fine painter and colorist from this area, Ray Morgan.
Wayne now resides with my wife Roberta, on their farm in Northern Phelps County, where he paints and studies full time.
Wayne Feeler is the Arts Rolla Artist of the Month for the month of September 2007. You can find his artwork on display throughout the month of September at The Centre, Rolla Health and Recreation Complex. | Oma and Noma Days Jul 26th, 2007 (7:18 PM)
Oma and Noma Days September 28 - 30, 2007 will be presented for the second year. This is a living history event that takes the fair goer back to the 1930s. A re-enactment of the historic opening of the dam which started the Lake of the Ozarks features the two sisters, with relatives still living in the town, who are the first to drive their car across Bagnell Dam. This three day festival plans to transport the fair goer back in time by creating an old-fashioned ambiance on the Strip at Bagnell Dam. Shop keepers, actors, muscians and government officials will be dressed in period costumes. More folk art than fine art, this is a living history scenario with street theater, story-telling, old-time crafts, and down-home music. The committee seeks help in finding the following: Jug bands, fiddle players, dobro, mandolin, harmonica players, barbershop quartets, etc. Musicians to set the mood and take us back to the 1930s. Suggestions for setting up some contests, like a fiddle-off, are welcome, as are contacts with musicians of this genre. Crafters and vendors - Also required to carry out the theme, with their booth space to reflect a marketplace in the 1930s. The entry fee is very reasonable to appeal to the non-professional crafters who have a skill and are not generally in the fair business, but have something to share with the public. The fee may be waived if crafter provides a lively demonstration and enhances the spirit of the festival. (we may also make a contest around best display as well) Old Time Photos can provide consultation for costumes and in some cases provide accessories to enhance the musicians' and artists' look. We extend this opportunity toward your art community's involvement in keeping the folk arts alive. We do welcome suggestions as we are only a year into this with an aim to make it a premiere fest in time. Please mark this on your calendar for 2007 and again in 2008 when we will have yet another year of experience under our collective belts. If you would like to get involved or if you would like more information contact Mike Page at 573 365 7132.

He has experience as an art director for creating ads. Mr. Speed said, “I've been passionate about photography since college, but have only recently made the full on career change to opening my own studio here in Ozark. My business is focused on advertising photography, but I'm also very much into fine art photography. Of course, there are rare instances when the two come together, which is the goal for my work.”
All awards for this show were underwritten by the Phelps County Bank and were presented the night of the reception. “We are honored and delighted to have this event underwritten by our friends at Phelps County Bank,” says Arts Rolla President, Loretta Wallis. “Phelps County Bank has been a wonderful partner for Arts Rolla throughout the year and continues to support our community in a variety of venues.” Financial assistance has also been provided, in part, by the Missouri Arts Council.

| Larry Morgan is Arts Rolla Artist of the Month for May May 2nd, 2007 (7:30 PM)
Arts Rolla is delighted to share the artwork of local artist, Larry Morgan with the community in an exhibit located at The Centre during the month of May. We invite you to join us for a reception to meet the artist and enjoy refreshments on May 4 from 4:30 PM to 6 PM. The exhibit and the reception are free and open to the public.
Larry Morgan describes himself as an untrained artist by accident, undisciplined, impulsive, and reactionary. His end product seldom reflects the original intent; with, composition, subject, and color, sometimes changing as the paints tell its own story. “I sometimes feel like an observer”, he laments. “I react to the flow of the paint, as it reveals itself. If no relationship develops I set it aside until it does. As images of texture and color lead the way, I follow. I do not work at art, I play. If it isn’t fun I don’t do it”. Although unexposed to the public until recently his commissioned works now hang in private collections on four continents
With a versatility that ranges from the designing and making of furniture and cabinetry to poetry, to musical composition, his creativity has led from political speech and script writing to producing and directing industrial films. At age sixty-seven his varied interests and talents continue to grow.
Artist Larry Morgan, with wife Nancy retired to their hill top Ozark farm, built their home, barns and art studio, and now raises annually a bumper crop of “chiggers, ticks and rocks”. His extensive travels as a skier, outdoorsman and deep sea fisherman coupled with a keen interest in history and architecture has led him to some of the most beautiful sites and cities of the world. These experiences find their way to his canvases.
Arts Rolla is delighted to share the work of this artist and looks forward to seeing you at the exhibit. Financial support for this exhibit has been provided in part by the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency and the National Endowment For The Arts. For more information about this exhibit, to purchase artwork or to learn about joining Arts Rolla, we invite you to visit our website at www.artsrolla.org or call Arts Rolla at 573.364.5539.

| Paper Slip Theatre Comedy Troupe Returns to Cedar Street Center Feb 1st, 2007 (3:28 PM)
Back by popular demand, the Paper Slip Theatre will be showcased as the fourth event in Ozark Actors Theatre's (OAT) 2007 Winter Season on Friday, March 9. This comedy troupe from the St. Louis area is certain to provide an evening of fun and laughter when they take the stage at Cedar Street Center, located at 701 N. Cedar in Rolla. Audience members are invited to come at 7 p.m. for pre-show light appetizers and an opportunity to meet the actors as they "warn up" for the hilarity that follows. Under the direction of Ed Reggi, improvisation is at the heart of this troupe. Local theatre patrons may remember Reggi, who played Tevya in the 2004 OAT summer production of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, and will most certainly enjoy the opportunity to see his comedic talents. Reggi spent his teen days sneaking onto the set of the Bill Cosby Show to learn the ropes from the comic master, Cosby himself. "Since I started studying theater when I was a kid, there wasn't a time when I didn't do improv," said Reggi, founder of Paper Slip Theatre. Reggi, who paid his dues at the famed Second City in Chicago, travels internationally performing improvised plays and training actors and also teaches improv at the Center of Creative Arts in University City, where he's the theater program coordinator. Improvisational comedy is a hilarious form of entertainment due to its spontaneous audience-interactive nature. According to Reggi, "It is powerful to be in the room with the act of creation. It's the opposite of seeing a favorite movie over and over. Whatever you see, it never will happen again. It's the act of creation, live." The Paper Slip Theatre is further committed to making all of their comedy clean, ensuring an evening of family-friendly fun on March 9. "We believe there are plenty of laughs to be found in life's little foibles and eccentricities, and we do not need to derive our comedy from foul language or any insensitive themes," stated Reggi. General admission tickets for Comedy Night featuring the Paper Slip Theatre along with food and fun are $15 for adults and $10 for students 18 and under. The ticket includes light appetizers served beginning at 7:00 PM in addition to the show. OAT is pleased to offer a 20% discount to active military and their families. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the OAT Box Office. Box Office hours are from 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM Monday through Friday and 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM on Saturday. For further information or to reserve a ticket by phone, call 573-364-9523 and leave a message for the Box Office. Tickets will also be sold at the door if seating is still available. Tickets are also available at this time for the last event in OAT's 2007 Winter Season set for Friday, April 13. Scheduled for that date will be the popular Night of One Acts, produced in collaboration with the UMR Theatre Department as well as the Rolla Public School Drama students.

Focus on the Ozark Plateau - Beauty in Your Backyard
Arts Rolla is pleased to announce that the exhibit at The Centre for the month of February will feature the work of two well-known Missouri photographers, Anne Lindgren and Jim Rathert.
The show, which highlights flora and fauna of our region through photography, has appropriately been named "Focus on The Ozark Plateau – Beauty in Your Backyard."
The public is invited to an Opening Reception on February 2nd from, 4:30 - 7:00 pm at The Centre, located at 1200 N. Holloway, Rolla, Missouri to meet the artists and to learn more about their work. The exhibit, which is free and open to the public, will be displayed at The Centre for the entire month of February Our photographers are: Anne Lindgren, who is a twenty-year resident of Rolla, Missouri, and has been active in the community art scene. Lindgren has sought opportunities to express her artistic skills since she was a young child, entering her first community art show when she was just seven years old.
Art training, formal and not so formal, continues to be the center of her educational and social life. And, she expresses her artist's eye in her career as the Marketing Communications Manager at Brewer Science.
Lindgren developed her interest in photography as an offshoot of her drawing and painting. Communicating the joyous energy that she senses while working with images is her goal in presenting this compilation of work.
Jim Rathert's name has been associated with the Missouri Department of Conservation but now he is moving along a new and creative direction. For over 2 decades his photos were featured in the MISSOURI CONSERVATIONIST magazine and delighted the magazine's 1.5 million readers throughout the Midwest and around the world.
Having just completed his first self-published project, the 2007 WONDROUS WATER BIRDS calendar, he has embarked on a book project, a series of photographic workshops, a line of commercial nature products and freelance photography ---- and perhaps a little time to relax.
His photographs speak volumes about conservation values and the importance of keeping nature in our lives.
Jim's photographic goals are simple: To place a greater emphasis on aesthetics; to broaden his scope beyond Missouri; to explore different photographic genres; to think more horizontally than vertically; to continue to strive to see the world more clearly; to rediscover the excitement and joy of nature photography and share it with others.
Jim is a board member of the newly formed Missouri Bluebird Society. He lives in Jefferson City with his wife Debbie and their two children, Josh and Jadrien.
Financial assistance for this project has been provided, in part, by the Missouri Arts Council, a Missouri State Agency. For more information about this exhibit you are invited to call the Arts Rolla office at 364-5539.
