Yellow Butterfly
By Deborah Dundstedter

Microscopic dust on wings, powering light.
From a distance, they are merely tiny flashes
of light.
The dying days of summer set in motion
Tis season of flight.
The perils are many for the yellow butterfly,
Who travels thousands of miles to mate and
die.

One direction,
One mind,
One force.
Gossamer bodies fly like haphazard strobe lights
Relentlessly south.

They are nothing but Love made manifest.

Now
By Jessica Dafni

there is nothing
between us
but history
and silence

and i sit
listening
to the bubbles
dissolve in my bath.

amoeboid shapes
shift the surface
stretching and splitting
to become others.

i pull my knees
to my chest
gathering my grief.
i am a fish
in a bowl

until i climb out
dripping and naked
to write this poem.

Time Warp
By Susan Christensen

When life seems tight and I need to get away
from news and views of those that get me down,
I crawl inside a book and spend the day
with interesting friends and place and town.
I wrap myself in words that flow from pens
of authors years since dead. Their stories tell
of misplaced love, the challenges of men,
and journeying by horseback, camel, rail.
Rowena sends he knight away, when prince
sees life in pauper's rage, he pledges rights
restored; bad Captain Bligh makes sailors wince;
and Darcy asks for love, forget the slights.
Time fades to nil and problems shrink and run.
When I open a book, a new world is begun.

Campsite Number Nine
By Joseph Haberstroh

Every year about this time
The west starts calling me
I long to see the mountains
And the turning aspen trees

My wife and I have been doing this
Since nineteen eighty four
Loading up our horses
And drive two thousand miles or more

In that time I have seen
A lot of chanes in our land
And I can tell you folks
The golf course thing has gotten out of hand

Where once we used to see
A yearling with its mother
There's a fellow wearing knickers
And by gosh, he's got a putter

And over on Zapata ranch
The boys are all irate
They planted fairways on the seventh
The elk ate'em on the eighth

An angry ranger said
Man this is obscene
Your horse is earing shrubbery
And poopin' on the greens

I said I'm awfully sorry
Clearly the fault is mine
I thought all these were campsites
I had chosen number nine

Once upon a time
Where the cowhands rode with chisum
Now the golf carts are a rollin'
And the golf balls are a whizzin'

But I'll keep right on headin'west
A quitter I am not
I'll have my horses wearing hard hats
And me a chamber pot

Call to Mind
By Roberta Higgins

Mama I hardly remember you
I try to recall
You nursed me
You soothed my wounds
There was a mystery about you
You were always there
Yet I'm not quite sure.

Soldiers
By Kay Frances Kizer

Soldiers who give up to serve
Soldiers who carry the flag
Soldiers who follow the Cross
Soldiers who defend their country
Soldiers who spread Christianity
Great sacrifices they make
Giving their lives for the Lord
Giving their lives for their country
Perhaps unrecognized on earth
But God in heaven knows their worth
A thanks from all should be the cry
Soldiers who carry the Cross
Soldiers who carry the flag
Their worth should be on earth
Their worth should be on earth

Heartfelt Love
By Donna Raterman

My friends, my family,
All of whom I hold dear,
I give you my love and friendship
To last year after year.

When you are feeling weak,
I will carry you through.
When you're happy and stsrong,
Beside you I'll stand true.

When all looks dim and dispair,
I will sing a song of hope.
As we face life's challenges,
Together, we will always cope.

I will give you strength in spirit
When you h ave crosses to bare.
I will endure your heartaches,
Together the pain we'll share.

When you have storms to weather,
I'll bring rainbows to your heart.
Feel my love pull you through
Right from the very start.

I will refresh your passion
When you feel you're standing alone.
Surround yuo with joy and laughter,
Reminisce in the love we've shown.

Know in your heart what matters most,
Is the love we all share,
As we weave this life's tapestry
Of heartfelt love and care!

Bubbles
By Jeff Thomas

where do the bubbles go in the bath
I'm still here, but they've gone
abandoned me to the water
cold and soiled
trembling in fear and solitude
where have those pesky bubbles gone
the drain's still closed.

Thinking about time
By Roberta Higgins

tick tock
tick tock
watch the clock
seconds
minutes
hours
days

Gotta go
gotta date
can't be late
minutes to burn
never to return
Time is free
for whom?

You
Me

Tick, tock

Boys of the farm
By Jo Ennis

Come on get up brother, let's go out and swing on the gate,
We'll do it quick, momma's cooking breakfast and I don't want to be late.
Fried eggs, grits, biscuits and ham,
"Don't you boys get dirty." Yes ma'am!
Cow pie aroma fills their nostrils, bellowing lows from the steers
vibrate the frolicking boys ears,
boys running across the field, laughter bouncing over the clouds
like a ball off a wall, tossing dirt clods gathered from fields plowed.
"Get off that gate before you kill yourselves and come to breakfast"
Tag you're it, I'm not going to be last
Scampering wildly they romp across the lawn
Brightly sparkling eyes, hair the color of fawn.

Come on brother let's go to granny's on our bikes,
I know she will have some cookies we like,
Bounding to their bikes they push off down the dirt road,
Look granny we've caught a toad!
"Oh, Oh, you boys catch that thing and take it back outside!"
Lunging after the escaped toad, boys gather it up and in long strides,
Gallop for the back door hurdling a dining chair.
Jump that electric fence, it's a dare.
I can make it, just watch me fly,
The boys attempt finds him squealing make it stop before I die!
No more of that for me, let's go home,
I want a root beer with lots of foam.

Come on brother let's go to the barn stall,
Do you think you can ride him and not fall?
Straddling the billy's back, sure I'll hold tight,
With a thwack of a boy's stick the goat took flight,
Full speed the goat ran stopping short at the fence,
Sailing through the air the boy lands hard his moan intense,
Running to the house yelling his brother prances,
Tugging her sleeve he jumps and dances,
Momma come quick I think he's killed himself, really it wasn't a dare,
"I swear what am I going to do with you pair!"
"Come to supper now; you'll wash those filthy hands if you have any sense,"
Bending over to retrieve his stick the boys' forehead bumped the electric fence,
Woowee! I heard hummingbirds in my head,
"You boys, hurry up now, it will soon be time for bed."

Freshly bathed boys, amble off to bed for the hour is late,
Hey brother, he says with a yawn, tomorrow let's swing on the gate.
